Eight applicants for every Worthing Tesco job

More than eight people applied for each new job at a giant superstore opening later this month.

Tesco said it was overwhelmed by more than 2,000 applications for 250 posts at its “Extra” store in West Durrington, Worthing.

Contractors are working frantically to finish the £18 million complex, which replaces a smaller store nearby.

The old store closed yesterday and the new store, employing a total of 556 staff, will open on Thursday, February 25, at 8am.

Tesco Extra manager Jon Shannon said: “The quality of applicants was fantastic and I am delighted with my new team."

An alternative title "Recession Shocker - More People than Jobs Scandle"

I think we all knew this already. Often it is simplified and called the "unemployement rate"....

8 applicants per job is not that great a response.

From my experience of advertising jobs in the past I'd expect something more in the region of 15-20 per role.

Is this meant to be news? Come on Argus there must be a Freedom of Information request you can put in to bulk out the paper. What about the amount some public body or other spent on loo paper last year? That would make a great story...

The unlucky rejected candidates won't have to wait long to apply for new positions as I am sure Tesco will be opening up a few doors further down the street in the next week or so.

any port in a storm, as people say. better some employment, rather than none. not everyone's cup of tea, i grant you, but some folk do have some pride, and work hard to put food on the table. those that say they wouldn't work there are just plain bone idle, or snobs. tesco are reputedly a good employer, with good staff benefits, so why not?

They can be no worse to work for than an American based UK supermarket chain. I know somebody who was given a verbal warning for not turning up on their day off, they had agreed to work overtime at Christmas, 2001, but were taken ill. Caring not, but the cheapest supermarket 11 years running, although not sure how.

Thought I read the title Eight apllicants for Worthless Tesco job at first, although I was wrong my intial thoughts seemed much more applicable.

So you'd prefer that some of the mum's who work in such places not to work there and live off of benefits you pay for?

Christ some of you lot are extremely obnoxious.

How strange! Whenever I complain about the lack of staff at their Hove branch (and the resulting queues) one of their excuses is that they cannot attract applicants. Another excuse is (and bear in mind their huge profits here) that they are "waiting for the next financial year before they recruit".

Or they just don't know why they are understaffed and they are just saying the first thing that comes into their heads to get rid of you so they can get back to doing their job, which is already difficult enough due to the lack of staff, which you seem to have noticed, but failed to realise that the staff in the branch will have NO control over employment levels.

I never said that I had complained to the branch staff. This was a reply from Head Office.

Well then whoever replied would have had no control over staff levels, just a default response. But well done for going to all the effort of wasting your time writing a letter to let them know they had wasted some of your time by making you queue.
