Brighton Centre redevelopment face new delay

Redevelopment of the Brighton Centre will not start for at least another three years – and it could be longer still.

Sources at Brighton and Hove City Council have revealed lucrative conference events are already being booked for the key venue in both autumn 2012 and 2013, quashing hopes work would be underway by then.

It is now thought the long-awaited revamp will not begin until as late as 2015, contrary to previous reports of a 2012 start.

The bookings appears to confirm rumours in the city's business community that the £400million redevelopment scheme, which also involves the Churchill Square car parks and the neighbouring Kingswest cinema and nightclub complex owned by Standard Life Investments, has lost momentum.

The revamp is widely considered as an urgent priority for the long-term prosperity of the city and the appearance of its seafront.

The council, which owns the centre, insists the project is still on track and said it should have more details next month.

In July it commissioned Make Architects, whose partners have been involved with London's Gherkin and Wembley Stadium, to draw up plans.

A council spokesman said: "Progress with such complex projects will never be rapid and nobody ever said it would be.

"We’re still working on it behind the scenes. But there’s nothing to announce and we hadn’t expected there would be at this stage. We’re hoping to have a clearer idea on timetable in March.”

The ongoing delays will be a disappointment to the hundreds of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops which rely on the business generated by conference delegates.

What a surprise - not!

How long has this been planned, more likely 2020 before they do anything, if at all!

I would luv to eat my words, but I doubt it!.

What a shame! I was getting excited about leaving my flat in the new Marina towers and arriving by monorail to attend the grand opening next year. I would have passed the Black Rock arena, the Brighton O and the i360 on my way and the King Alfred towers would have been glittering in the distance. I guess I will have to wait a bit longer...

lol, hopefully built on top of all the NIMBYs that want Brighton to remain a faded Victorian backwater selling Candy Floss.

A great post, and sadly highlights everything that continues to make the City an embarrassment all too often, the Ferris Wheel debacle being another to add.

Personally, I think it's a crying shame the paddling pool was filled in, when I feel developing this would have been far more beneficial to locals and day trippers alike...............
..oh, and I also await to see when (if ever) we'll see a world class leisure centre built that could truly put the City on the map, rather than suffer the shame that Burgess Hill, and arguably Haywards Heath have better facilities than we do.

Oh! Come on City Council. I know we are crawling out of recession but your constant procrastination is terminally strangling this wonderful city. We need challenging, innovative projects to lift this city and, by the way, those that seem to protest are often unaware of the rich architectural diversity we have here, so get off your backsides and take more careful look around you!

A Victorian (or should that be Georgian?) backwater selling candy floss would be a vast improvement. Brighton still hasn't managed to get it's own football ground up and running yet.

As Bennn wonderfully points out, just another scheme that never comes to anything

Perhaps they are waiting for it to fall down by itself, then money can be saved by not having to demolish it.

Why not just knock it down! it's one of the most disgusting buildings in the uk that should have never been built in the first place. Not only is it disgusting to look at but it's also souless to be in.

As the Council has shown itself incapable of building more bookshelves in the Jubilee Library, I cannot see how it would be capable of constructing anything more complicated, such as a new Brighton Centre. Why wasn't a more enduring building planned for the site forty years ago?

Give it a rest Hawtree. I think we've established now that you consider the number of bookshelves at the Jubilee inadequate.
I'm considering challenging you to a duel myself. You can choose... swords or pistols.... I'm not fussy.

I have to appluad some realism at last from a Brighion poster!, all to often anywhere outside of Brighton is slagged off for one reason for another when the truth is that Brighton isnt all perfectly wonderful.. it has its bad and good bits..

Ah once again, Brighton and Hove struggles to make a decision on something which could drag the place kicking ans screaming into the 21st century - still living in the past - what about the future? What about a better city for thos of us who live here now?!? Check out Cardiff - the momentum of change there has been staggering and the place has lost none of its local heritage or charm....... Shameful Brighton, shameful!

You've just gotta love this Council!!! Bunch of headless chickens, without a braincell between them. Unless it profits certain individuals, most things are a no-go. Just keep bleeding the taxpayers dry. That's all they're good at...

If the Council cannot get right such basic things as library shelves, how can it ever hope to achieve "iconic" buildings? Others could cite other examples. The fact that a "senior" councillor could only answer a Question about music librares by making that fatuous remark about a duel shows precisely why the Council administration is unable to get ahead with such a thing as a new Brighton Centre.

The Brighton Centre site is earmarked as the hub-station for the proposed underground train tube system.

The work on this building will probably coincide with the commencement of our Metro Train system.

when the council staff are riddled with nobodys and bogged down with bureaucracy what do you expect. public sector employment has rocketed under labour just creating jobs without any direction, most are doubled up and uncohesive. if you tried to ring the council to speak about this situation no one would know who you needed to speak to.

for god sake come on Mary Mears and the new chief exec stop picking on the much needed students and the car driver and get this city progressing, the roads moving, get rid of the junkies drunks and van dwellers and get the streets cleaned up.

You need to get out more if you think it is one of the most disgusting in the Uk. Me thinks you need to go alone to Slough or Swindon or Basingstoke or Leeds or Hull or Glasgow etc etc
It may be old but at least it is well used on a daily basis Three years of redevelopment now would push many over the edge

I agree with Charismatic, give it a rest, or better still go buy some books/bookshelves or whatever it is you are moaning about if you are that fussed about it.

Whingers like you are a waste of time, I shall be 2nd in line for a duel, and I choose swords you tiresome bookworm! lol

I agree we need this redevelpoment but we're not going to get it for a long time. Nu Labour and the Tories are devoted to the market, so only private finance is allowed for any public infrastructure projects. Commercial property has collapsed in value. hence the end of all the trashy projects of the last few years. I should be delighted to see new development of the Brighton Centre but preferably without the obligatory embellishment of hundreds of poky little flats and another 80 or so Starbucks. Oh, and Tesco Expresses too.

I get out alot actually for your information and still think that the Brighton Centre is one of the most disgusting buildings in the uk. So what if it's well used, it's still souless. I'd rather see a concert at the dome than that dump of a place. I tell you what, I'll get out more if you get your eyes tested!
