A woman was brutally raped in a hotel basement after she met a man at a nightclub, a court was told.

Editor's note: Mr Mosquito was subsequently acquitted of rape following a retrial.

Anthony Mosquito met the woman, who cannot be named, at the Volks Club on Brighton seafront.

They spent part of the evening drinking, chatting and flirting with each other before going back to the Beach Hotel at 3am where Mosquito was staying with friends.

She agreed they would get a room together but they could not find anyone to book them in at that time of the morning.

Sarah Lindop, prosecuting, said Mosquito took the woman down some stairs to the deserted breakfast room area.

She said that the alleged victim had drunk five Jack Daniels but knew exactly where she was and what was happening to her.

Miss Lindop said Mosquito had got the victim on the floor and raped her. She added: “She bit him on the cheek to try to get him off her.

“He then punched her in the face more than once.”

The court was told Mosquito raped the woman a second time before she fled into the street.

Miss Lindop said police were called and found bruises and marks consistent with forced intercourse.

Mosquito was arrested a few days later and gave detectives a prepared statement denying he had raped or assaulted her.

He claimed she had “just flipped” after they had consensual sex together. (mon) Mosquito, of no fixed address, denies two charges of rape on June 6, 2007.

The trial continues.
