Redhill Cycling Club's Racing Secretary, Jon Masters, and leading junior rider, James Hopkins, have made a mark in the Surrey Cycle Racing League handicap road races.

In a 10-lap race on the three-mile triangular circuit at Horne, near Smallfield, Masters finished in eighth place.

Sixteen-year-old Hopkins, who is in only his first full season of racing, finished immediately behind him in ninth place out of a field of 65 riders.

Masters again finished in 13th place at the Wivesfield circuit. In the Kitsmead Lane venue near Ottershaw, Hopkins was unable to break out of his slow group but Masters finished in eighth.

On Thursday, racing moved to the fast, eight-mile Newdigate course. Masters powered across the line in a large group in 14th. Hopkins held an impressive 21st in a field of 50.

Speaking after the race to the Life, Masters said: "James and I are competing against sponsored riders and semi-professional teams, so these results are really pleasing for us both. James is doing particularly well competing against more experienced riders."
