Albion fans are calling for a public poll on naming sections of the new Falmer Stadium after the club’s heroes.

In the past few days Seagulls’ supporters have told The Argus they would like one of the stands, gates or rooms at the new ground to be named after former club chairman Dick Knight.

But now some are suggesting a decision on which heroes are commemorated should be thrown open to public vote.

Paul Sillience, of Withdean, Brighton, said: “It is a tricky one as without Dick the club would have disappeared but without Tony Bloom we wouldn’t have a stadium.

“There are so many people who should be honoured - Alan Mullery was our best manager, Peter Ward our best player.

“The fairest way would be a public poll so that everybody can have their say.”

Dom Lancaster, 27, from Preston Road, Brighton, said: “A poll would be a great idea. There has to be some form of tribute to Gordon Smith’s famous miss in the 1983 cup final.

“For football fans up and down the country that is the one thing Albion are famous for.”

Knight, who stood down last summer after Tony Bloom completed a takeover, will be remembered as the man who guided the Seagulls away from the brink of oblivion in 1997.

The question if he should be honoured has divided opinion among fans.

Tony Henshaw, 63, of Patcham, Brighton, said: “The naming of the stadium should reflect somebody who has done a lot for the community. Dick is as good as choice as anyone.”

Sandra White, 55, of Ladies Mile Road, Patcham, said: “There are so many people who would be prime candidates it’s hard to narrow it down.

“The important thing is the stadium is finally happening.”

Albion managing director Ken Brown previously said: “It is very early days, but naming any part of the new ground will be a decision taken by the board at an appropriate time.”
