Part of an eyesore multi-storey car park is unlikely to be demolished even though experts have warned it could collapse.

Around 40 years’ exposure to salt-laden sea air has eaten into the concrete and steel deck in front of the Grafton car park in Marine Parade, Worthing.

Now borough councillors are being urged to spend £342,000 on urgent repairs.

Demolition of the deck, leaving the NCP-run car park intact, would cost an extra £160,000.

A report to be considered by councillors on Thursday will say the deck is the responsibility of the council and not NCP.

Scaffolding has been installed as a short term measure to stop concrete breaking off and hitting people using the service road below.

If major repairs are not carried out the structure could collapse.

Multi-million pound plans to knock down the car park and deck to make way for shops and flats fell through during the credit crunch.

Developers paid the council compensation after pulling out of the deal.
