Hospice bosses write to Gordon Brown

Hospice bosses have written to Gordon Brown calling for better NHS funding.

The team at St Wilfrid's Hospice in Eastbourne contacted the Prime Minister after he highlighted the importance of “minimising the fear of dying badly”.

Hospice chairman Arnold Simanowitz said: “Our hospice cares for more than 800 people a year and our doctors and nurses work proactively to improve the quality of life for hospice patients.

“St Wilfrid’s receives just 15% of its total running costs from the NHS.

“Our specialist care is provided largely because of local generosity and volunteer support.

“We believe passionately that all people should have the right to the specialist hospice care they need.

“Demand for our care is constantly growing but we are not sure we can continue to meet that need without an increase in NHS funding.”
