University of Sussex staff to strike next week

4:57pm Tuesday 9th March 2010

University of Sussex staff are to stage a strike in a row over job cuts, it was announced tonight.

Members of the University and College Union will walk out next Thursday, March 18 following an overwhelming vote in favour of taking industrial action.

Union official Paul Cecil said: "Industrial action is an absolute last resort, but the university's unwillingness to enter into meaningful negotiations has forced our hand.

"The bottom line is that serious job losses will impact massively on the quality of education and services we can offer here at Sussex, which will result in a far worse experience for students."

The union said there was a threat of compulsory redundancies over plans to cut more than 100 jobs.
