Trouble feared at Worthing planning meeting

Police are on alert in case of trouble at a meeting into controversial plans for an 875-home estate.

Officials at Worthing Borough Council have spoken with Sussex Police about security at the local authority’s planning meeting at the town hall next week.

The scheme, earmarked for countryside at West Durrington in Worthing, has already sparked angry protests.

Thousands of people have objected to the creation of the new estate, with many claiming the development will be an environmental disaster, destroying precious wildlife habitat.

Since the original planning application was submitted in 2004 more than 2,000 letters and emails, plus petitions, had been submitted to the council.

Protesters have set up a camp in the ancient Titnore Woods amid fears that hundreds of trees could be felled to make way for the straightening of Titnore Lane, a winding country road.

Planning officers have substantially cut back the number that can be cut down, from 275 to 75 in a bid to quell criticism.

Developers have also vowed to plant a further 550 trees and create wildlife havens.

New leisure facilities would include a skateboard park, two playing fields including an all-weather floodlit surface and public art worth £50,000.

But conservationists fear great crested newts, badgers and dormice will be threatened by the upheaval.

There were also concerns about flooding, and noise generated by a new access road from Titnore Lane to the estate.

Many have called for the plans to be referred to the Government for further investigation.

One protester said: “Worthing is already heavily overdeveloped yet this scheme will exacerbate urban sprawl resulting in loss of habitat and wildlife, loss of food producing land, loss of one of the town’s few remaining green lungs and loss of tranquillity.”

A report to the members of the council’s planning meeting on Monday(March 15) notes: “This is a highly contentious application which has provoked considerable public opposition.”

It urges councillors to support the application. The meeting starts at 2pm.

No wonder people are up in arms...

The governments own inspector has said that: "the Worthing Borough Council's Core Strategy will need to set out clearly why this greenfield site needs to be released when the Borough has historically built more houses than is required and where there appears to be a large supply of brownfield sites."...

In addition, the development will be prone to flooding, along with surrounding areas, and there will be traffic gridlock due to the developers not taking either properly into account....

Any decision to proceed would fly in the face of local people's objections, and show that the council are completely out of touch with Worthing's real needs.

Worthing council has never had the interests of the people at heart! it's about time they realised they are here to serve us, not the other way round!.

With the Audit commission already looking into the fiasco Worthing’s planners have created by allowing the massive west Durrington Tesco Extra to be built so close to peoples homes etc, Titnoregate will join Tescogate to give the government watchdog enough reason to rid Worthing of it’s incompetent officers and council.

What on earth are the previous postings about ? Worthing council has just won a prestigious national award for good practice ! Have a look at the council's own website.

Suspect the previous postings must be Labour supporters, even the daft libs couldn't or wouldn't post such rubbish.

Thank you 'dogsdinner', perhaps the Lib-Dem supporters are not aware that they have elected members on the Worthing Council ? Hope that helps 'Big Nasty' ?

Feeling like you and others do about Worthing Council, suspect it's time for the Lib Dem supporters to start kicking butts in their own camp ?

If you read the link by Gubbins you would have seen that Worthing and Adur have won an award for saving the council tax payers money while keeping up the front line services so it is unfair for Big Nasty to accuse them of only being good at blowing their own trumpet. No doubt with his favoured bunch in charge we would be seeing closing theatres, leisure centres, two week bin collections etc! Where are the ideas from the Dim Libs? They are strangely silent.

O.K. in order to save money people have to leave/be sacked/made redundant from their jobs!, this is a sad fact of life, so as far as I am concerned NO money has been saved in this merger as a lot of the jobs are doubled up!, in fact depending on which report you read it turns out that the merger has actually COST tax payers money not saved any!.

You can put all the spin you like on this subject but either way, £Millions of tax payers money has been saved and Worthing Council has been positively recognised for that initiative - fact.

May I say, please stop this childish 'ya-boo-sucks' nonsense or 'Dim-Libs' will catch on as the proper name for our yokel, local, loony left Libs.

It may help also if you look around for Liberal-Democrat examples to support your shallow views. I copied this off another website.

The National Audit Office have quite a bit to say about that particular Council ! Read it and learn something useful.

We could also look back at the NCP parking contract in Worthing ?

WHEN are the Lib-Dems going to apologise to Worthing residents for negotiating that in 2003 ?

Worthing Lib-Dems could also consider reviewing their gutter level media policy regarding the Maybridge Centre.

Originally the Dim-Libs wanted that money to go to Broadwater ! Now I notice they are trying to claim cheap credit because the tories said NO, it would be used in Maybridge.

Like it or not Big Nasty, the tories have done an excellent job on Worthing and Adur Councils - get over it.

When people read this report properly, they will realise that the Liberal-Democrats are completely unelectable.

Big Nasty, you may remember when our Dim Libs fell out with the Chief Exec in their 2002-04 period of office. Luckily the Tories sorted it out. Here is what can happen if the Libs are left to carry on personal vendettas...

Guess you guy’s better read what’s at the top of the Google chart:

Save Titnore Woods!

It’s disgusting, an absolute disgrace. For over 8 years people, have petitioned, protested, written letters and done everything possible to show the council that we don't want this bloody horrendous development.

Despite this, the morons at the council have recommended that the application is approved. These power hungry greedy bastards claim to represent us but they are completely out of touch with what the people of Worthing want. Their arrogance and ignorance makes this meeting completely illegitimate, it should not be going ahead, only the town as a whole has the right to decide the future of such an important community asset, through a referendum. We should not allow these scum to make this decision on our behalf.

At the meeting they will probably try to only allow us, the public, to speak for 15 minutes and then completely ignore what we have to say anyway. We should not stand for this we should demand they listen to everything we have to say, every complaint we have about this development and about the pathetic people who claim to represent us.

So please come to the protest @ 1.30pm, Monday 15th March outside the assembly Hall and then attend the meeting and make sure your views are heard!

First off I have no allegiance to ANY political party! I just look around Worthing and compared to other towns what are we offered!!, NO decent leisure centre with 50 meter pool, NO multiplex cinema, if you don't want to pay the council tax by direct debit the only way to pay with cash is to go to the town hall!, NO paypoint, NO way of paying at a post office, and they have now even withdrawn the facility to pay over the counter at a bank!, selling off PUBLIC land to private developers, I could go on! so tell me exactly what DO Worthing council actually do for the people of Worthing!!!!.

You are really showing your true colours now!, you can't answer a single question of mine so you have to resort to childish ramblings!, in your heart you know I'm right and there isn't an answer apart from a change of power at Worthing!.

Gubbins says...

Why change power in Worthing ?

The Lib-Dems had a disastrous period in office and Worthing residents have to pay through the nose for years to come.- see previous postings.

We all now know for absolute certainty that the Dim-Libs were wholly responsible for this dreadful NCP parking contract.

We also know for absolute certainty that the Dim-Libs were wholly responsible for disgraceful staff relations with the previous Chief Executive. I'm told that too cost the Worthing tax payer a fortune. Unfortunately I don't know the actual figure.

We also know for absolute certainty that the Dim-Libs were seriously considering closing various high profile and important leisure facilities because they couldn't balance the books. This resulted in a council tax increase of nearly 9% for one financial year.

As for your proposals for a 50 metre pool, plain silly and I suggest you read the long term financial report on it. It would become financially unviable by 2015/16.

In all fairness you probably don't know it but no swimming pool in Britain even breaks even on costs. All your proposals just add up to one thing, a dirty great millstone around the necks of Worthing residents.

I respect your personal and political beliefs on this subject but one clear truth emerges:

No problem exists in Worthing for which voting Liberal Democrat is the solution.

Big Nasty says...

I think you are wrong on two counts, 1 David Lloyd in Worthing is already in profit after only 5 years (and has two swimming pools) and so is the K2 in Crawley! 2 are you saying EVERYTHING needs to make a profit!, O.K. lets shut down schools as they are a millstone around peoples necks and do not make a profit, same with libraries, Oh and while we are at it roads don't make a profit either!, do you see what I am getting at, we all think different things are important to us and for me it is leisure & fitness, for some with children it is schooling etc, for motorists it is the roads, and you never did answer the question about payment methods for the council tax!, in fact looking at the anti disability discrimination laws is would seem that the council is acting unlawfully in restricting the way you can pay this tax!, the council is trying in vain to get us all to pay by direct debit!.

Schools are an essential service, swimming pools are not.

Roads are an essential service also, swimming pools are not.

For you it is leisure and fitness that's important. Go and pay for it yourself. the tax payer is already overburdened/

No schools are not an essential service for people with no children, why should I pay for people to have children, if they can't afford to pay to have them educated then don't have them, after all it's not essential to have kids!,
do you see were you logic is flawed? I could argue the fitness is essential as if you are unfit you will put more strain on the NHS and some people are so unfit that they cannot even work hence I have to pay for them as well!, as you see you really are beginning to sound like a selfish pr@t!.
