Dog walkers attacked with pepper spray on Worthing seafront

A masked man is pepper-spraying seafront dog-walkers.

At least two attacks on people and their pets have been reported to police in Worthing.

Officers are urging people to contact them if they see anyone acting suspiciously in the area where the times took place.

On February 23 a man was walking his dog in West Parade, Goring, at about 5.15pm when he spotted a man walking towards him.

The stranger, who was wearing a scarf over his face and a beanie hat, sprayed a liquid towards him.

Most of the spray was taken away by the breeze but some of it hit the man’s face and eyes.

He suffered burning pain for about 20 minutes before he was able to call the police.

The attacker was white and about 5ft 10in, in dark clothes.

The weapon is believed to be pepper spray similar to that used by police to bring violent suspects under control.

Police in Worthing are investigating whether two other reported attacks were carried out by the same man.

In one, at about 3.30pm on January 22, a dog was sprayed in the face.

Police said it did not need veterinary treatment because pepper spray does not affect dogs in the same way as humans.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “It is suspected that this male is targeting dog walkers along the seafront path from Heene Road towards Goring and has sprayed dogs and their owners.”

Chief Inspector James Asser, the force’s district commander for Worthing and Adur, said: “It is obviously of concern to use.

“This individual does appear to have attacked two particular dog walkers.

“We have got a description and we are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help identify the individual.”

Worthing borough councillor Mary Lermitte said: “It is absolutely outrageous.

“I hope they catch somebody for doing it soon.”

Anyone with information is asked to call PC Steve Hargrave, of Sussex Police, on 0845 6070999 quoting serial 1265 of February 23.

well thats like saying all mums are on benefits or all oap's are moany or all young people are yobs!
I am a dog owner and i always always pick up my dogs mess, even my 4 year old comments when people do not pick up thier dogs mess.not all dog walkers are the same so unless this man actually watched them walk away from thier dogs mess I doubt he has that as a reason, if he did see them walk away from thier dogs mess then good on him.
my point being not all dog walkers/owners are irresponsible.

Almost certainly the reason.
I wish he would come and patrol the undercliff path between Saltdean and Rottingdean. It's a dog's toilet. Dog poo everywhere.

I totally agree with both comments above. I think the whole of the country is one big dog toilet!
I live in South Wales in the constituency of Torfaen. My 10yr daughter and I WALK to and from school EVERY DAY and the amount of dog mess on the pathways is unbelievable. So much so that I am seriously considering the car for the school run! It's literally sickening, disgusting and unhealthy. Most dog owners are hypocritical and anti-social (you only have to walk our streets to see that). I wonder if Councillor Mary Lermitte is as outraged at the disgusting health hazards that dogs and their irresponsible owners present to the rest of us? I doubt it. In my experience, local councils only ever post notices that dogs can't read and dog owners ignore!!!

There seems to have been a noticable increase in this problem everywhere in Brighton since Christmas. Is it new dog owners?

I clearly didnt mean all of them do it, just a minority. I have and love dogs.

I know a guy who lives near to my work who opens the door to his house early in the morning when its dark and lets his dog just $h1t across the street. I would love to pepper spray him if i could get away with it. Oh and yes, I along with others have complained about it.

There are some real idiots on here.Get a life! You cant go around pepper spraying people just because you are annoyed with something. Most dog walkers are responsible.

I am a responsible dog-owner I always pick up their poo. I won't take them anywhere along the seafront as you have to dodge the poo left by irresponsible owners. Not only does this pose a health hazard to people, and in particular to children, but other dogs can catch diseases from sniffing the mess (dirty habit, but that's what dogs do, unfortunately).

It really makes me angry when I take my dogs out and find mess all over the place. It gets every dog-owner a bad name. I wish that the Council would enforce their fines for not clearing up dog mess. After all, it would be very easy to identify these owners if one or two members of the Council's staff were to watch the worst areas on an ad-hoc basis. I'm sure that these people would soon learn to act more responsibly if they got fined.

Forgot to add this point to my posting. Perhaps the police should watch out for this person, that's if they can be bothered to get out of their cars and walk!

Some dog owners will never pickup poo, sad, but try a walk along the cliff top from Rottingdean to Saltdean to see the mass of rubbish left by humans, pastic bags, cans, bottles, clothes, broken furniture etc, etc., at least dog mess dosen't pollute our seas. Out of sight out of mind.

You two ate a lot of paint chips as children, didn't you?
.
By this logic, it should be OK to pepper spray people who smoke in public, or talk to loudly on their mobile in public, or don't maintain their cars properly & spew smog, and so on and so on......

I use the coastal paths between Rottingdean and Worthing regularly, and Saltdean (from the Lido car park) under the tunnel and along the undercliff walk and parts of Worthing are absolutely covered in dogs' mess.
It is absolutely revolting. I was surprised in Worthing as the beach area is so public and well used.
Perhaps it's time to bring back dog licenses and the money used only for dog bins, poo cleaning and dog welfare, not just dropped into the council pot.
The money could be used to employ dog wardens to monitor and prosecute those who don't pick up poo.

This is totally bizarre. If half of these comments were directed against other groups (ethnic, LGBT, ect) they would be removed immediately.

Most dog owners are responsible. If you don't like anyone you cannot attack them in the street.

Arrest the nutter before they hurt someone. If you support the nutter you are only one step away from the asylum.

Wow talk about sweeping generalisations. Well lets se how you like it. Your in Wales so probably Welsh, so i wont use any big words. Earthwitch, hmm sounds like a hippy pagan type of person. Most likely fat since those types are usually chubby. And your a single mum with 4 kids by 4 different fathers.

Ok see what i did there? You cant just paint everyone with the same brush. I could just as easily say since the dogs are in your area that its because the owners are Welsh that they let them make a mess everywhere. And why are you on here anyway? Most dog owners are responsible. Its the moronic louts that make the mess. And the the commentor who said you may as wel spray smokers is spot on.

This chap should take himself up to Lancing Clump, which must be the biggest dogs toilet in the country, you can smell it as soon as you get out of your car.
You'd have about a 50/50 chance of stepping in some. It's got so bad that I doubt anyone goes there except to allow their dog to foul the place.
Beats me rigid why people who do not have the space to allow the dogs to defacate on their own property, have the things in the first place.
Why some of the few who do bother to clear up at Lancing, put the organic matter in a non organic bag and then decorate the bushes and hedges with them is beyond me.

How come everyone is accepting the simple explanation when we don't know why he did it. There's very liitle dog mess on Worthing seafront (West Parade is in Worthing, not Goring, but the Argus geography is always awful). We lived with dog mess for years and I do not see why people get so upset about it now. There's far more human mess left everywhere.

Did it ever occur to anyone that this guy just might be an abusive nutter who likes spraying people in the face, and the fact that the people he's gotten to so far just happen to have been dog walkers? In other words, a coincidence? Many of the people round there WILL be people walking their dogs! If this was a story about a man just pepper-spraying random people in the face there would be unanimous disapproval! And even IF he was targetting dog walkers, for WHATEVER reason, the idea that anyone could condone such attacks is beyond me. What if it were your mum or dad or someone you cared about, out minding their own business and walking their dog??? The only solution to this problem is policing and fines, going after the irresponsible few that spoil it for everyone else. Boy there are some idiot comments on this story!

If someone did that to my own beloved I'd be out there hunting them down, the police wouldn't get a look in.

Yes I am Welsh and proud to be so. The name 'earthwitch' reflects the consideration I have for the planet we live on. If you are able to locate the noun 'pagan' in a dictionary (if you possess one) you might not be so derisive about such people. However judging by your comments I seriously doubt it! I DID NOT make any sweeping generalisations about anyone or thing. At no point did I suggest that pepper spraying was a good idea. You seem to be more offended that I am Welsh and you have chosen to concentrate on that rather than make a constructive comment about the topic in question. I am neither a hippy nor a pagan nor am I fat. In fact I run a slimming club! I have three children all by the the same father to whom I have been married for twenty-five years. Though unlike you I do not judge or stereotype people who do fall into any of those categories that you assumed applied to me . My husband is an extremely successful businessman. Our two older children are both at universities that happen to be in the top ten in the country so you can use as many big words as you think you can spell (though I didn't see any evidence of competence, (grammatical or otherwise in your comments). I am sorry if my comments offended you in any way. I can assure you that most certainly was not my intention, but other than my being Welsh (for whom you obviously have a pathological hatred of, which no doubt is born of ignorance and fear) I cannot see why you chose to react to my comment in the way you did..... 'cheeze....burger'!
