Men in deprived parts of Brighton will die 10 years younger

Men living in deprived areas of Brighton and Hove are likely to die more than ten years earlier than those in more affluent parts of the city.

The decade-long health divide has been partly blamed on poor lifestyle choices including smoking, not getting enough exercise and a bad diet.

Research shows people in areas including Moulsecoomb, East Brighton and south Portslade, have higher levels of obesity and diabetes, more smokers and a higher number of binge drinkers.

The ward with the lowest average life expectancy for both men and women is Queen's Park, 75.8 years, and the area with the highest is Brunswick at 84.5 years.

However experts have calculated that men living in the ward have a lifespan 10.4 years lower than those in Brunswick.

The difference between women is 5.6 years.

Illnesses that make the biggest contributors to the life-expectancy gap are heart disease, lung cancer, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide.

NHS Brighton and Hove and the city council are working together on a five year plan to improve the health of the city's population.

If they don't care why should anybody else?

lets throw tax money at them to persuade them not to be so stupid as to eat pies, chips, drink to excess, smoke and take drugs
OR we could ensure that state benefit can never be more than 80% of minimum wage and tell them to pull their finger out!

You would think that poor people would be healthier, unable to afford to smoke, unable to afford to buy meat so eating lots of veg, unable to booze, walking everywhere as they can't afford cars, but instead they get enough benefits to live an unhealthy life.

Interesting to read that suicide reduces your life expectancy, you learn something every day.

Take what little money they have by putting huge taxes on cigarettes, alcohol and anything else that they consume to get some enjoyment and it is no surprise they have nothing left for 'healthy living'.

Here's what the headline should be"some men in deprived,or not deprived parts of Brighton, will die 10 years younger because they drink, take drugs, eat all the wrong food and don't exercise".My aunt lived in a deprived area, she was 93 when she went.My point being that it's not the area you live in,it's the lifestyle you lead.

Hang on a minute...what about all the middle class families in Hove that drink more alcohol in the home than the average working class going to the pub? Or those middle class that sell drugs such as Meow to the working class? Why is everyone assumed to be 'not working' because they come from East Brighton of Moulsecoomb? And nobody has mentioned the fact that the government (again run by the middle class) has failed to tax unhealthy foods and subsidise fruit and veg. Yes, it is down to personal responsibility and a good education, but many live in areas where the shops sell few choices of healthy food at high prices and beer is often priced cheaper than water.

Correct. But,the price of beer has nothing to do with consumption, not much has.Plenty examples of this and you'll be able to think of as many as me."beer is often priced cheaper than water",is actually an indictment of the price of water, not the other way about.
