More than 30 firefighters are currently battling a roof blaze at a house in Coolham Road, near West Chiltington.
Crews from Storrington, Billingshurst, Horsham, Petworth and Shoreham are in attendance after the call came in just after 3.30pm.
A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the fire at the detached house had spread after a small electrical fire.
She said the small fire had tried to be put out with water – something which made the fire worse.
No one is in the building but the B2139 Coolham Road has been closed.
