Metal is targeted by thieves across Sussex

Metal thieves are targeting Sussex as police report a growing number of crimes, particularly the theft of lead.

The latest spate was reported in Crawley, where NHS-owned bungalows were stripped of copper piping, boilers and radiators.

Two homes used by vulnerable people in Waterside Close, Bewbush, were targeted some time between the end of January and March 5.

Wet weather exposed crimes where lead had been removed from roofs.

St Mary’s Church Hall in Ilex Way, Goring, and Top Shop in Montague Street, Worthing, were among buildings targeted.

Police in Lewes reported large amounts of lead had been removed from Southover Grange, the Old Grammar School, the Little Theatre and the Jireh Chapel in Malling Street.

Copper pipes and lightning conductors have been taken from outside buildings and radiators and hot water tanks stolen from building sites, including at Barcombe Primary School, Ringmer Community College and Hamsey Primary School in Cooksbridge Anyone with information about metal thefts is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999, quoting serial 442 of March 5 for the Crawley raids.

This is none of our business. The police should be able to solve this on their own without help from the public. That is why we pay them.
.
If they can't solve this without help from the public, it is time to cut their overly-high salaries and huge pensions,

I saw somebody today in Brighton with a Metallica T shirt. He must be the guilty one.

Here is a few clues to help the police solve these crimes.
1. watch out for a angler with 1 tonne of lead weights in his tackle bag
2 watch out for divers with 1/2 tonne weight belts
3 noticed anyone casting a new keel for a yacht in the back garden

In the old days of course bobby on the beat would have simply checked metal yards, roofing lead is either flashings or sheet, code 4 for flashings, code 5 rarely 6 for sheet, which also is not to easy to disguise in the lead stack, the metal is only of value when it is sold for cash, by law all such sales are supposed to be recorded, buyers registered and sellers in possesion of a waste carriers licence, for a quick guide to outlets let your fingers do the walking open up the yellow pages surprisingly there are not actually that many buyers in the south of england but my guess is these crimes are on the back burner awaiting the day that something turns up in the course of other matters. mean while let the public pay in the form of increased insurance premiums

Bur Bibble, surely you don't want the Police to solve this, they are all corrupt according to you and all 'criminals' are victims of an unjust society and should be immediately pardoned?
