Hove residents fear delivery clash chaos

Feras have been raised that delivery lorries to a new supermarket will cause “chaos” on a busy road.

Sainsbury’s Local in Western Road, Hove, opened its doors on Wednesday – almost directly opposite a Tesco Express.

Residents, who voiced opposition to the Sainsbury’s store, argue that lorries making deliveries to the two shops at the same time will block the road.

Councillor Paul Elgood said: “The council’s response has been wholly inadequate.

Over the past month we have been pushing officers to talk to Sainsbury’s to try to minimise the effect of the loading in Western Road. Residents are deeply concerned it’s going to cause a double blockage as Tesco unloads almost daily opposite.

“Buses and other vehicles won’t be able to pass freely.”

He said he has requested a meeting with council officers about the issue.

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokeswoman said: “The two supermarkets opened in existing retail units so did not require planning permission. Therefore the council was unable to impose any restrictions on deliveries.

“Major retailers tend to use large vehicles for deliveries and we are aware this can cause problems at certain times.

“We would urge Tesco and Sainsbury’s to get together to discuss how they can coordinate deliveries to avoid disruption and be good neighbours to both residents and other businesses in the area.”

A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “Our intended delivery solution for our new Western Road Local is to time our delivery to not coincide with our neighbours.”

The Sainsbury’s in Western Road has created 32 jobs.

Well, out of all of the responses quoted, Sainsbury's seams the most sensible and thought out.
And, can't this happen anywhere - regardless of who occupies the premises?

Why have Sainsbury's opened another shop in Western Road when they have one further down the street already?

Ermmm … that doesn't seem to have stopped Tesco; or perhaps you haven't noticed that they have another store in the same road, too.

I know there's a Tesco's at the end of Western Road but where is the other one?
Anyway the point i'm making is why do we need all these mini supermarkets that are cropping up everywhere?

At least at Sanisbury's they have decent food unlike Tesco. Mind you I hope their staff are better trained than the rabble at Lewes road, they've not even heard of the term 'customer service'.

at busy periods, easter, christmas, etc, there is no way these deliveries can be co-ordinated. each delivery takes about 30-45 mins on average, maybe even more, and it will only take a traffic hold up to get these two lorries arriving at the same time. as all the stock is in roll cages, why can't the lorries park round the corner, in holland rd, or the other way, which i can't remember the name of. either that or just say deliveries before 6am or after 8pm, end of, no exceptions. while they are at it, can the council ask NCP, or whoever is in charge of wardens, to keep the rest of western rd clear too!! on my last visit to the area, there were 2 BMW's parked outside the fruit shop, just along from sainsburys, for at least 2 hours without moving, neither showing disabled badges, and one not even showing tax! the other side, outside the bar and grill, is just as bad. my belief is that wardens are told to leave this area alone, as this has been going on for years, and when i asked a warden what he was going to do about an illegally parked vehicle, his response was,'it will be gone in a minute'. 3hrs later it was still there, but no ticket!!!!

There must be hundreds of high streets across the country with shops opposite each other. How on earth does the rest of the UK cope?

In the name of local competition the opening of this store is welcomed.
As has already been said in the article it was already retail so B&H CC could not object. This puts the onus on the supermarkets to come to some kind of agreement so the lower half of Western road does not during deliveries become N.C.P like.

Why are these firms allowed to park their huge trucks on yellow lines when anybody else is ticketed?

So much for Mary Mears's "shop local" stickers. They were just a sop; they have no meaning when one sees that special treatment is accorded to corporates.

Please use the 'shift' key for more that 'NCP' and 'BMW', then I might read your post.

Pedant! I think ou mean 'cap lock', not shift.

There is nothing pedantic, davyboy, about using sentences and starting them with a capital letter. If you want people to read you ramblings I suggest you do this. And kj, is quite correct - you use the shift key for that - not the caps lock key.

This whole story is a mountain made out of a very small molehill. Supermarkets aren't the only shops that have deliveries in large vans.

It won't/can't be any worse than when deliveries are made to the Tesco's Express situated on Denmark Villa's

No, I mean 'shift'. If I'd meant 'cap lock' I'd have entered 'cap lock'. Using 'cap lock' would have resulted in the whole post being capitalised, rather than, as tilburyre has realised, using capital letters to start sentences.

Maybe it is pedantic, I'm not in the least bit worried about being called a pedant.
