Brighton nightclub attack left man with broken ribs

A man’s ribs were broken when he was given a kicking during a night out.

Sebastian Kalinanski was assaulted after he left the Casablanca night club in Brighton with his brother Lech and two friends.

The Polish hotel worker had spent the day showing his brother around Brighton after he arrived for a holiday.

Mr Kalinanski was left with two broken ribs, a broken thumb and a chipped tooth after he was repeatedly kicked as he lay unconscious on the ground.

He could only remember being punched and then waking in an ambulance in the early hours of July 2 last year.

Samuel Bassett and Kane Haffenden, both 20, claim they were trying to defend themselves after punches were thrown at them.

Nicholas Hall, prosecuting at Hove Crown Court, said Mr Kalinanski was subjected to a “vicious and sustained attack” by the two defendants while he was on the ground.

He said: “They laid into him together, punching and kicking him for no good reason at all.”

Mr Kalinanski said Bassett and Haffenden were part of a group of seven men and a woman who called them “immigrants” and chased after them in King’s Road when they left the club.

Lech Kalinanski, speaking through an interpreter, told the court the incident happened after one of his friends made a comment about the woman’s skirt being too short.

He said: “My brother was punched first by the blond-haired muscular man.

Another man joined in and after several punches my brother was unconscious.

He was kicked at least ten times by both men as he was lying unconscious on the ground.

“When it ended I turned my brother over and I was very scared when I saw his injuries.”

Bassett, of Clayton Walk, Worthing, and Haffenden, of Ringmer Road, Worthing, deny assault.
