Sussex jobless total rises

The dole queues in Sussex were stretched even longer last month, with 121 more people claiming jobless benefits than under the previous count.

Official figures showed that 33,197 people in the county claimed Jobseeker's Allowance in February - up 0.3% on January. Areas recording rises in claimants included Adur, Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings, Lewes, Mid-Sussex and Wealden.

However, several parts of Sussex are faring better as the country emerges from recession.

Brighton and Hove recorded a drop in claimants, from 7,817 to 7,759, while Arun, Chichester, Horsham, Rother and Worthing also recorded falls.

The Office for National Statistics data showed the number of people claiming JSA across the country fell by 32,300 during the month, while the International Labour Organisation's measure of unemployment - which includes students looking for work - fell 33,000 on the quarter to 2.45 million - the largest fall in unemployment for two and a half years.

However, the Government warned that further increases in unemployment were expected before the summer, before further falls in the second half of the year.

Many of those jobs offer such poor rates of pay that very few people can afford to take them.
.
In the "featured jobs", Administrator in Shoreham By Sea, £7.00 per hour for 4 hours a day. If you don't live in Shoreham it might cost half that just to get there.
.
Paying people peanuts is not a good way to fill vacancies. People have to live.

Can't be worse than East Croydon, where they regularly pull up in their modified cars to collect their dole money.

Even low-paid jobs require a modicum of effort though. Some people just dont want to work and expect something for nothing. I think there's something seriously wrong with our current benefits package. The system is too easy to bypass and too overloaded for mistakes to be spotted and rectified.

The benefits system in the country is very unfair. The major problem we have is the minimum wage is way too low and the cost of living and transport is just getting out of hand.Too many employers take advantage of the minimum wage epecially now in the reccession. It is a vicious circle in that those who want to work end up being used as cheap labour to line the pockets of those who don't want to work. Another point is this. The jobs you see advertised often do not exist. Reason being that it is a PR exercise for their competitors to think they are recruiting more staff, or just treading the water to see if anyone will work for a hideous salary!

We've all got Golden Brown and the NuLabour Stazi to thank for this bloated nanny-state which funds the feckless layabout Brits. Roll on May 2010.
