Parents are being asked to fork out hundreds of pounds to buy top-of-the-range computers for their daughters at a technology college.
Davison CE High School for Girls in Selborne Road, Worthing, has sent letters to parents of Year 8 pupils asking if they would be willing to contribute to the cost of an Apple iPad Tablet Computer.
The school wants every Year 9 pupil to use their iPad in lessons as part of its new elearning project, which will begin in September.
In the letter, the school's deputy headteacher Andrew McDonald-Bowyer said: "As a technology college we believe in the power of electronic learning tools such as laptops, netbooks and tablet PCs and the difference they can make to achievement in school." However, the letter added: "We get no extra funding from the Government to do this, so we are seeking to fund this by parental contributions. There may be the possibility of some charitable funding, specifically to help our families on lower incomes."
iPads are 9.7in tablet computers with virtual keyboards which enable users to surf the web, display ebooks, write emails and play videos.
They will not be launched in the UK until the end of March and Apple, which created the device, has yet to announce how much they will cost.
In America prices begin at $499 (£326).

Hang on just a minute Argus - did the letter really specifically ask for a contibution to an Apple iPad? That would be daft considering their limited uses/high cost comparative to a laptop/netbook. However, if they asked for a contribution in order to buy "laptops, netbooks and tablet PCs" to enhace kids education then where is the problem ? I believe there is plenty of value in their use in the classroom. Specifically demanding iPads is ridiculous, they are underpowered and vastly overpriced (based on US prices/likley UK prices). You paying for a brand. Kids no more need iPads than they need Prada excercise books.

Spanners wrote:Lack of flash support is a deliberate ploy because the technology itself is buggy, a memory hog and restrictive. HTML 5 is the cleaner, faster alternative to which of course the iPad supports and to why major websites such as WSJ, YouTube are moving their content over to HTML 5. This is a called tech leap btw. No multitasking. That's funny because you can for instance play music whilst using another app and with push notifications that prompt you with links to new mail, events etc switching back and forth is easy. The reason Apple held back on multi-tasking is because it drains battery life and they didn't want their device to be sluggish and underpowered like their competitor's devices. Now that Apple have designed a chip that can preserve battery life, I'm sure you will see full multi-tasking in iPad 4.0 software update - not hardware update - software. Your point about why would schools and parents want to be saddled with costs towards batteries and purchasing an alternative - what like a laptop/netbook which has cheap parts and inferior operating system to run on them which in turn will lead to IT support costs and replacement costs more so than an Apple product down the line? Yes thats good cost-cutting thinking - buy cheap computer now, even though we will have to pay our hundreds and hundreds of pounds later... Apple fanboy?? yeh you are right and for good legitimate, future proof reasons. over to you.

So ,much as I hate to upset a loyal Apple Fanboy such as yourself, an iPad is clearly not the best solution for cash strapped schools and parents. They are no even remotely essential of course not. And challenge you to show me why they are.

The fanboys (and girls in this case) will always give you a million points of why Macs are better. They are just totally sucked in by Apple's marketing, and think that they belong to some sort of social movement, and that they are in some way different and better. It's a computer dumbass, who cares? Caorline, have you even used Windows 7? I doubt it. It's awesome. Might have taken Microsoft a while to get it together, but at least it was built from the ground up, unlike OSX, which is a very closed-source variant of FreeBSD, a free open-source OS Unix kernel. Way to go Apple. Cutting edge there. In fact I know poeple who have got rid of OSX altogether on their MacBook Pros as Windows 7 runs really well on it.
Anyway, all this arguing is pointless. What can your Mac do that my Windows machine can't? Nothing. So who cares? Your Mac might look nicer, which is clearly just a question of taste, but it costs twice as much for the same spec and does the same things as a Windows machine. Plus mine is cheaper to get fixed, and I'm not tied into any kind of "care" package with Apple. If I want to change my graphics card, or add some RAM, or even upgrade my processor, I can. Easily. I dont have to send it back to Apple, for some exorbitant fee, or buy a new machine for twice the price. Don't you see? Jobs had made you all buy into this "lifestyle choice, man", and he's sitting atop his ever increasing pile of cash, laughing at you poor suckers.
If they were competetivly priced, and Apple were a bit more open minded/source about things, I would be waving the Apple flag for a hilltop. But they're not. They have a horrible capitalist ethos. You'd think they' be a bit more left-wing and social. They like you to think that, but it's a lie.

Look, they are not perfect nor is any company but you can't deny the design, build and reliability **** all over Microsoft not to mention their implementation and introduction of technologies such as multi-touch which now every single mobile device company is scrambling to copy and have copied. Even Microsoft have ditched their Windows Mobile operating system on smartphones in favour of redesigning a completely new version because they realised they had no chance of competing if they didn't. I actually like the look of the new Windows 7 mobile OS but time will tell whether its still .DLL hell and susceptible to viruses and spyware to a greater extent that Apple's operating systems. If you are happy with you Windows life choice then good luck and i'll see you on the Mac forums next year when you see the light!

I did use Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora and Mythbuntu for a while. I tried some different flavours, but I actually found Kubuntu to be even slower than Windows Fista. I also found I need to go back into Windows for some stuff I needed to do, and was rebootng the whole time. In the end just went back to Windows. I could have given OSX a go, but then I play games on my PC, and as most games use DirectX rather than OpenGL, that puts Macs right out. That, and the fact they're a bunch of bastards ofc :)

I've used both and linux still beats windows hands down and anyone that knows anything about a computer knows that. All of windows 7's new features have been available through ubuntu for decades. It's windows that's behind the times.
Ah, so because you run ALLLL the OS's, you can state something as fact? The fact (snigger) that you have to back yourself up with such an argument proves how weak your opinion is.
I'm pretty sure security experts such as McAffee and Symantec know a lot more about security then you do. Both companies have said that W7 is a more secure platform than XP or Vista.
But you run all the OS's, so you're right? Right?
Er.....
(P.S I've worked in a computer lab which had over 100 machines running Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, 7, OSX (each different variant) and 25 different Nix distros. So if you want to have an argument about who has run the most OS's...feel free....)
