Brighton students' bid to pop world record

The bubble has burst again and again for these record breakers.

Students at the University of Brighton popped about 100 metres of bubble wrap in just one minute in a bid to become champions of the world.

More than 80 students gathered on the university campus in Grand Parade, Brighton, to pop 500,000 bubbles - more than 8,300 every second.

Organiser Kay Webster said that she wanted to elevate a traditional exercise for idle hands into an art form.

The 20-year-old illustration student added: “It was for a project where we have to celebrate 50 years of bubble wrap and I thought the best way to do this was to set up a world record.

“We’re encouraged on our course not to stick to one medium, we’re expected to experiment with different types and not just restrict ourselves to drawing.”

She added her project, which marks the 50th anniversary of bubble wrap, was the perfect anecdote to the stress of student life.

Kay explained: “We’re encouraged on our course not to stick to one medium, we’re expected to experiment with different types and not just restrict ourselves to drawing.

“It’s quite stressful in the third year so it’s nice to do something fun like this among all the other boring stuff we have to do.

“I’m thinking popping bubble wrap could be a good way to deal with the stress of my course.”

She added: “There is no current world record for bubble wrap popping and I tried to get our attempt officially recognised by the Guinness World Records but it takes about six weeks and I didn’t have that long.

“I had a look at the wrap after they’d finished and I didn’t see many that weren’t popped so we’re calling it an unofficial world record.”

Another non-story from the Argus. They really are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Nice to see this young lady taking some time out from her Diploma in Media Studies to do something more useful like popping bubble wrap. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Thatcher's invention of Polyversities was one of the best things ever done in this country.
