A teenager suffered serious head injuries when he was set upon by three men in the street in Crawley.

The 19-year-old was with a friend walking towards the level crossing in High Street at about 10.20pm on Friday when he was attacked outside a solicitor's office and an electrical shop.

Three men walked towards them and made threats, before one of them punched the victim in the face.

He fell and hit his head on the bonnet of a parked car, before dropping to the ground and hitting his head on the pavement.

The three men ran off through Ifield Road towards Asda and Pegler Way.

The victim, who is from Surrey, was taken to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, for treatment for a suspected serious head injury. His condition was described as stable this morning.

The main attacker was white, in his early 20s, between 5ft 10in and 6ft, medium or slim build, with dark short or medium-length hair, wearing a checked shirt, possibly green and black, and blue jeans.

He is also believed to have a tattoo on his left wrist.

The two other men were both white and in their early 20s.

One was between 5ft 10in and 6ft, wearing a checked shirt, the other was about 5ft tall with light brown hair wearing a green patterned t-shirt.

Detective Sergeant Jon Pink, of Crawley CID, said: "This appears to have been an unprovoked attack on a man on a night out in Crawley.

"There is no information to suggest that the suspect is known to the victim or that there had been any earlier incident in the town to provoke this attack.

"The victim is recovering in hospital and our thoughts are with him and his family at this time.

"I am appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident or who is able to identify the suspects to contact Crawley CID."

Anyone with information can call Sussex Police on 01293 583823 or 0845 6070999, quoting serial 2125 of March 19, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
