Join the Sussex switch-off

Lights across Sussex will be switched off during Earth Hour to help spread the message about tackling climate change.

The Argus is encouraging residents, community groups and businesses to support Earth Hour, which takes place on Saturday between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

People all across the world are being asked to switch their lights off to help support the planet.

Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, and is organised by the World Wildlife Fund. Brighton and Hove City Council has asked its staff members to make sure lights and other electrical items are switched off where appropriate until they are needed again on Monday.

However, lights on the seafront Birdcage bandstand will remain switched on because they have been specifically designed for lowcarbon use, with the latest LED technology allowing for minimal energy use.

I for one will be supporting it.

Incidentally its the World Wide Fund for Nature, not World Wildlife Fund.

I for one, have no intention of groping around in the dark for an hour.

Hmm. An element of 'preaching to the converted' here. The people who think it will make a difference will join in, those who think it's just gesture politics will ignore it.

Now if the electric companies just switched off all the power for an hour ...

I'm really looking forward to this as I have several burglaries planned for that evening, and they'll be much easier in the dark!

If our politicians could just switch themselves off for an hour, far more money would be saved, and it would benefit our environment no end!

It's a symbolic gesture that actually does harm.

The grid will still be generating all that power, so it'll go to waste. If too many people turn stuff off it might even cause part of the grid to go offline, leading to a power-cut.

O K......So what are you going to do , in the dark, for a whole hour?
I take it that other electric alliances will also be turned off?

Do the organisers really believe this will make the slightest bit of difference?

In order to achieve this it would need to be a huge reduction in consumption. There is no way Earth Hour will achieive this. Even if it were capable of doing so then it would be obselete anyhow. By that I mean the climate change message would have been spread most efffectively. So, for now, this is good idea although there may be a point in the future where it could, potentially have a negative impact.

What a lot of nonsence!
Climate change is the biggest con trick ever devised on this planet!, it is a natural condition and the 6b. of humans only add 2% to it
I will make sure that I have both my t.v's on and every light in the house on on Saturday night, instead of only just one!

Why don't we just put the clocks forward an extra hour and then it won't be dark at 8:30 anyways! :)

Excellent! Keep it up John. I have shares in the power companies, and all your money you keep spending ends up as dividends in my bank account.

"I'ts a load of ballcocks"

by the time the event is due to take place , I assume most of the people who post here will be half-cut, and won't care less about some stupid idea like this.

So, in Sydney Australia (or anywhere in Oz, for that matter) they won't be groping around in the dark as it'll be daylight there.

They're not as dumb as they look.

WWF does indeed stand for "World Wide Fund For Nature". I always thought Worldwide was one word. Just goes to confirm my belief that these bunny-huggers never had a proper, public school education.

From the WWF website:
.
How do I organise a talk about WWF for my organisation?
A. Unfortunately WWF does not have enough staff posted around the UK to be able to give talks about our work. However, WWF Scotland has trained volunteer presenters who give talks to community groups in Scotland. If you are a community group interested in receiving such a talk, please contact WWF Scotland scotland@wwf.org.uk

What do the initials WWF stand for?
A. When WWF was first set up in 1961, WWF stood for World Wildlife Fund.

In 1986 we changed this to World Wide Fund for Nature to emphasise the broad nature of WWF’s conservation work, which includes not only species, but also habitats and the reversal of environmental degradation.

However, since July 2000, WWF has been known simply by its initials, with the descriptor of 'For a Living Planet'.
.
So you're all wrong!

A simply pointless gesture. If anything is to be achieved then turn off equipment that consumes high amounts of energy - TVs, fridges, cookers, central heating, etc.

It is intersting to note that the council is instructing staff to turn off equipment that is not needed again until the turn up for work on Monday. The implication here is that they normally leave everything on. Well done the council for showing how you really view the environment. This no doubt explains why the outside lights at Leach Court in Eastern Road are burning 24 hours a day and have been for months. B&HC have no idea about energy efficiency and the environment.

I think what is REALLY needed is a cull on people, like they had in that lovely 1970s film "Logan's Run". The council could send emails to people who had to snuff it, and then they could be lynched by mobs on the seafront. It would be good exercise and a boost for "community spirit", but remind us all not to consume too much, or we could be next! Then Jenny Agutta could inexplicably get undressed and ....

Interestingly, according to the article in todays copy of The Argus, the Palace Pier who participated in this event last year, will not be switching off this year. The reason - A horror convention has been booked. Surely darkness will create the atmosphere which will make it all the more memorable. Health and Safety was never a requirement in Transylvania.

Perhaps we will have to, perhaps we won't survive, but if that happens do we really want to go out in a state of misery?

saving energy is not a 1 hour a year token gesture, its a 24/7 necessity

so excuse me while i get the kitchen appliance to pour me another G and T with a twist,

Can't help but think some comments are a bit harsh. I don't buy the arguement that this action does damage to the grid so why not let the eco-folks crack on? It probably is largely pointless - but it doesnt cost anyone anything, doesnt damage anything and I can ignore the whole thing entirely if I choose.

Have a word with them then if you feel that strongly, or report them to the Council.

Perhaps then a difference long-term can be made by changing people attitudes
