Former Conservative city councillor Jayne Bennett is to stand as an independent in the local elections this spring.

Coun Bennett is best known in Brighton and Hove for her campaign to stop breast cancer services being moved to Haywards Heath.

She was elected four years ago as a Conservative in Goldsmid ward but resigned from the party to continue as an independent.

Now she has decided to contest Stanford ward, normally one of the safest Tory areas in the city.

Coun Bennett is the chairwoman of the Hove Park Residents' Association and started Friends of Hove Park. She started the Pink Dolphin Appeal, which backs a new breast cancer unit, and is a member of the Community Health Council.

Coun Bennett said: "I believe national party politics should not be a part of local government.

"Not being hindered by party rules will allow me to best represent the many views and best interests of all those who live in Stanford Ward."
