Residents are dismayed that a long-serving councillor has been ousted in favour of a newcomer for the next election.

Mo Marsh has been a Brighton and Hove Labour councillor for Marine ward for seven years.

She moved to Brighton in 1965 as a student and subsequently became involved in local politics.

Coun Marsh has dedicated herself to the ward - which includes Whitehawk - and sits on many committees.

She put herself forward for reselection as the Labour candidate to fight the seat at next year's election but the party turned her down in favour of Craig Turton, a former Haringey councillor who now lives in Portslade.

Because Coun Marsh wanted to continue representing Marine ward she did not put her name forward for any other areas, so she has not been selected as a candidate for any seats.

Eddie Cope, a Whitehawk resident, said: "It's diabolical the way that lady has been treated for all her hard work. What will this guy know when he lives in Portslade?"

Residents say Coun Marsh is being pulled out of the area at a crucial time in its development.

Fred Netley, known as Mr Whitehawk, said: "I think it's a travesty that Mo will not be allowed stand for the area."

Coun Marsh said: "I am devastated and shocked beyond belief."

Mr Turton was accepted as a candidate at a meeting last night.

He said: "I'm fresh blood. It's not like the monarchy, there is no right of succession. Mo replaced someone. That is the way it goes."
