A Good Samaritan may hold vital clues to a suspected hit-and-run accident in Burgess Hill.

The driver left a 14-year-old girl injured after the light silvery blue vehicle struck her as she was crossing Leylands Road road near the junction of Gladstone Road and Leylands Road.

The car that struck the girl was travelling west along

Leylands Road but did not stop. The girl suffered face and ankle injuries but was not seriously hurt and was taken to her GP.

The accident happened at 7.20am yesterday about 30

yards from Wivelsfield Station and was reported by the girl's father. A police spokesman said: "We are appealing for witnesseses, in particular a gentleman who assisted the girl."

There have been calls for extra safety measures near the station for youngsters crossing the road. At present there is a one-way traffic system operating near the spot.

At peak times there have been traffic hold-ups because of work on the short road tunnel next to the station in Leylands Road under the London-Brighton line.

The road is usually used by hundreds of schoolchildren on their way to classes at Manor Field School or to take trains to schools in Hassocks and Haywards Heath. But the area hasn't been as busy this week because of half-term

holidays.

Safety experts at West Sussex Council have been monitoring the one-way traffic lights to see if they could be installed after the rail tunnel work is done to reduce dangers for children walking under the tunnel. The possibility of a pavement being widened is also being considered.
