Campaigners gather in bid to save Saltdean Lido

CAMPAIGN: Saltdean Lido CAMPAIGN: Saltdean Lido

Campaigners have vowed to do whatever they can to keep one of the last lidos in Sussex open.

At two public meetings attended by hundreds of people yesterday, a panel consisting of three different community groups asked residents what they wanted to happen to Saltdean Lido and the grade II listed art deco building.

The Save Saltdean Lido Campaign was set up after the building's leaseholder, Dennis Audley, revealed proposals earlier this month to build 102 flats on the site and fill in the pool.

The plans, which are yet to be submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council, caused outrage among Saltdean residents who said the redevelopment would ruin the iconic building.

Yesterday’s meetings were jointly chaired by the Saltdean Residents' Association, Saltdean Community Association and the Save Saltdean Lido Campaign.

Organisers had to turn people away from the first meeting after they reached full capacity and people were told to come back for the second meeting at 3.30pm.

Rebecca Crook, from the Save Saltdean Lido Campaign, said they were looking at several different options to save the lido including applying for Grade II* listed status. The other idea is for the community to try to lease and run the lido.

*one* of the last lidos in Sussex? Where are the others? Does "Dennis" Audley own them too? I think we should be told.

@corruptive

You could try the enthusiastically up-to-date and slightly technically inept www.lidos.org.uk

As to who owns what, can't help you. Sorry. Ask google.

I see. There appear to be about 5 other Lidos in Sussex! Indeed it looks to me like we must be one of the most lididinous counties in England! My God! Sussex has gone lido crazy!!!

I'm really rather hoping that those who object to the redevelopment of the Lido are the same people who voted "Yes" to the Falmer stadium in the so-called referendum. Poetic justice indeed.

I'm afraid the Falmer fiasco has left me with absolutely no sympathy for the residents of B&H who object to developments on their doorstep - but who are quite happy for them to takeplace somewhere else.

Save the Lido so future generations can see real architecture at work, not the modern faceless buildings being created now. On another subject, the Ovindean school for the hard of hearing is apparantly to close, a real shame for future generations of the hearing impaired children around the Sussex/Kent & Surrey area.

Let it go. It obviously is not used enough to be profitable so surely these people who are campaigning (probably just for the sake of it) don't use it often anyway. We are in England, not Spain, the weathers crap, this kind of place has no use. Someone owns it so it's his right to do what he wants with it within the law.

i wouldnt bother, if the council want to (and they do, due to lots of hands in back pockets, wink wink), they will just force it through and approve it anyhow. this seems to be how this council work, problem is, all this back hander business is becoming a little transparent!
in a few months, i would like to see the owners bank statement, i bet your bottom dollar, there will be a payment to one councellor or two, bet ya!!!!

How often did the campaigners go to the lido in (say) the past 5 years. how much of their own money are they proposing to pay the owner to offset losses? I bet the answer to both questions is a resounding zero.

This glorious facility is allowed to rot, people stop using it (you can hardly blame them for that) then they apply for permission to turn it into something else and make a financial killing. Property owners have done this sort of thing since time immemorial.

As dcsussex says, there's little hope of getting the council behind any solution that would benefit the community at the expense of reduced profits for the owner.
Even if it isn't literally brown envelopes that motivate our council, it certainly isn't the quality of our environment or of citizens' lives.

This “use it or lose it” type of comment shows complete lack of insight as to what is/has been happening. There is a lot of people who live in Saltdean who would LOVE to have a USABLE swimming pool that isn’t shabby and has workable facilities, plus a nice bistro/bar/restauran
t wouldn’t go amiss either – also maybe some adult swimming only session so we don’t get divebombed. If the Lido had been kept up-to-date, had decent opening hours and been advertised properly, people WOULD use it. What about heated swimming at night for us oldies? Be lovely to swim looking up at the stars. Seems to me that Mr Audley has just bought it, run it down purely so he can say ‘AHA – no-one uses it, therefore I’ll do what I like with it’. Well NO Mr A. You seem to have a fight on your hands. Good times.
