Brighton man jailed for attack on wife

A man has been jailed for a violent attack on his wife and one of her friends.

Francis Lawlor, 48, kicked and punched his wife Joan during the incident at a flat in Findon Road, Brighton, on Saturday.

Lawlor, of Nuthurst Place, Brighton, also pulled her friend Debbie McEwan to the ground by her hair.

Mrs Lawlor was taken to the Royal Susex County Hospital, Brighton, for treatment for bruising and swelling on her head.

At Brighton Magistrates' Court yesterday, Lawlor admitted assaulting both women by beating.

He was jailed for 21 weeks and must also serve the remaining three weeks of an earlier sentence he had been released on licence for after he previously assaulted his wife.

I think his wife should leave him and get a better guy, as this one is obviously a complete mentalist.

Deserves a tougher sentence. Idiot. Shame we can't comment on the Asbo yob. For a judge to say he deserves a good kicking has put a smile on my face. Keepin' it real!!! About time n'all

It's the bit about previously assaulting his wife that gets me. If I ever raised a hand to my wife it would be the first and last time before she left me.

Without meeting this individual it is clear that he is an inadequate, seething, filthy ball of narcissism and misogyny. As stated in the article, he will have to serve the remainder of a previous sentence for an attack on his wife. Despicable though it is, I would be prepared to let one attack (and only one) on a woman pass. However, this loathsome **** apparently makes a habit of attacking women. Pre-empting the “Women do it too” responses (yes, they do but nowhere near the levels of DV perpetrated by males.) males of this type are clearly an issue. Personally, I favour initial chemical gonadectomy for repeat offenders, backed up with the physical removal of the testes if they still do not learn. Allow them NO access to their children, as this is a perfect recipe for teaching boys to hit girls and to teach girls that this is normal behavior in men. Support their partners and help them to leave but penalise them if they continue to allow these people to pose a threat to their children. Always challenge this filth, the worst chat up line ending I ever overheard was this; “and I’m not afraid to give a bird a dig!” (you can hear the knickers of all the women on this earth just evaporate, can’t you? Really attractive, what a catch!). In such a case I see no reason why the state should shy away from cutting off the NADS of these idiots.

Nip it in the bud, denigrate those who do it and those who defend it. Action is long overdue, violent men should have to manage their “hormones”, otherwise the state should be allowed to step in and do it on their behalf in the event that this small task proves too much for that significant group of men who do so much harm.

Steady on, Brighton 1970.

Like kraftwerker, I was also amused by the Magistrate's "He Deserves a good kicking" comment on the Asbo story. I thought to myself "I bet if *I* said someone deserved a good kicking, Argus online editor Jo Wadsworth would tell me off and threaten to ban me! But a magistrate says it and he gets his own article!" But that's broken Britain for you!

my thoughts exactly. this bloke clearly has a problem, and doesn't deserve a partner. having said that, did drink play a part in this? if they were both paralytic, then they may have wound each other up, but that is no excuse for a beating. surprised he only got 21 weeks, after his previous form!!

Lawlor of Nuthurst Place. How appropriate. What a loser, a man who hits women.

I'm actually killing myself laughing at the choice to crowbar the end of that chat up line in that rant - Please can you elaborate on that one? Where in hell were you when you heard that!? I mean, aside from Speed Dating at HMP Lewes, I can't think of any pub where that line would be chosen as an icebreaker. The Franklin comes closest, but it's more of a second or third date line

I usually disagree with complaints that sentences are too lenient. I nearly always find them too harsh but this one seems ludicrously light, especially as he has previous for the same offence.

Brighton1970 - I'm right there with you!

I'm astonished at the light punishment, given he's done it before and this time he assaulted TWO people. He clearly doesn't care and his first punishment taught him nothing. I'd wager he'll be back before the judge for the same offence soon enough.

It's a shame we can't exile them really, that'd be perfect. To a nice remote island in the middle of the sea...

I am totally with Brighton1970. You read the news, and this country is getting out of control. We have to find some way of controlling these violent scum, cos the hotel-like prsion cells ain't working. For rapists and pedos (men who use their anatomy for violence), I say 3 strikes and you're out - balls cut off and we test on them instead of animals (better skin and eye match anyway). I myself have been (past) a victim of a violent psyco, but thankfully I managed to escape after three and half years, with the support of my family. Many women are not this lucky and come to believe this is the way life is supposed to be. Don't forget the fact he's been charged for violent abuse on her twice, will not be the only assalts he's commited on her, just the ones he's been charged with. Not to mention, if he's this way inclined with her, he's probably the sort of bloke who causes trouble out in town too. Let's not put up with this!

Sounds like you need counselling to get over this man hating phase you're going through.
