Two councillors fed up with the filthy state of a car park want to enlist the help of TV cleaners Kim and Aggie to get it scrubbed up.

Averil Older and Geoff Wells said they had tried for months to get Brighton and Hove City Council to clean Norton Road car park next to Hove Town Hall.

Coun Wells said a recent attempt to hose down some of the steps had failed to shift the grime and dust, which he said was beginning to create a health hazard.

The Conservative councillors suggested Kim and Aggie, stars of Channel 4's How Clean Is Your House?, might be able to do a better job.

They have even come up with a name for a new show - How Clean Is Your Car Park?

Coun Wells said: "This car park hasn't been properly cleaned since it was built in the Seventies. It's so filthy it's just one gigantic health hazard.

"People pee there when they feel like it and it's half an inch thick with dirty black dust."

Last November Coun Wells asked council officers to wash the car park while other work was carried out on the building.

But the councillor found the work less than adequate and vowed to continue pressing for a proper spring clean.

He said: "They just seemed to have brushed the problem under the carpet.

"The council was concerned the drains wouldn't be adequate to deal with a full hosing down but that's laughable."

Coun Older said: "It's filthy. They have made a token effort to clean it. The front and rear stairwell was jetted down at the weekend but there is only one jet hose in the city."

Coun Older believes the same effort is needed in Hove as is being put into maintaining the car park in Brighton's Churchill Square.

She said: "Effort has to be made regularly. Perhaps we could ask Kim and Aggie to come down and try to clean it. It's not the prettiest of buildings but because of that it should be looked after."

A council spokeswoman said: "The Norton Road car park is cleaned regularly but due to the fact it is an open-air car park, it tends to get more dirty than roofed car parks.

"However, it was cleaned only last week and is in an acceptable condition. If there is a problem, we will review our current standards to ensure the car park is cleaned as often as necessary."

Channel 4 was unavailable for comment.
