The latest in a number of letters from Alison Smith of London Road, Patcham (The Argus, January 14), further seeks to support the use of Withdean Stadium as a permanent home for Brighton and Hove Albion.

However, we feel she has ignored a number of reasons Withdean Stadium could never be an acceptable permanent home for a successful Championship football club.

Firstly, the Withdean Nature Reserve has only recently been designated and is used and enjoyed not only by residents living locally but also by visitors to the city who come many times a year to examine the large variety of flora and fauna evident throughout the seasons.

Secondly, access to the stadium cannot be improved because of the two narrow railway bridges that seriously restrict access to the stadium.

Thirdly, there is nowhere for buses and coaches to park or satisfactorily load and unload passengers without seriously inhibiting other traffic and transport.

This problem has worsened since the introduction of the bus and cycle lanes in the new A23 Sustainable Transport Corridor.

Fourthly, there would never be sufficient enabling facilities to make Withdean Stadium suitable for the high standard of football this city deserves, however creatively the site was developed.

As councillors for Withdean Ward we remain committed to supporting Brighton and Hove Albion in its quest for a suitable stadium on the designated field at Falmer.

We also remain committed to the pledge that we, Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club and Brighton and Hove City Council made to the Withdean residents and supporters of the Albion that the use of the inadequate facilities at Withdean Stadium would be temporary.
