Rare stamps secretly amassed by an aristocratic racing driver has raised more than £3.5m in the first of a series of auctions.

Sir Gawaine Baillie, who died last year, raced with famous names including Jackie Stewart in the Fifties and Sixties.

He lived in Haywards Heath and, in 1959, founded HPC Engineering in Burgess Hill.

The first of ten auctions was held at Sotheby's in London this week and it is estimated the complete collection, put up for sale by his widow Margot, will raise £11m.
