A new service offering practical and emotional support for people affected by domestic violence is being launched today.

The scheme is being set up in East Brighton and residents are invited to meet experts to find out more about what it offers.

Called Safe as Houses, the initiative recognises that women are not alone in suffering from domestic violence, with children and young people also often affected.

It will feature drop-in sessions, mother and toddler groups and women's support groups in Moulsecoomb and Whitehawk.

It will also support projects for children and young people, with experts offering preventative work in schools.

The scheme was created because residents said they wanted support close to home rather than having to access services based in the city centre.

The initiative is the first of its kind to take place in East Brighton and has three years of support from eb4U, the Government funded regeneration organisation for the area.

Binah Taylor, eb4U domestic violence co-ordinator, said: "The scheme will hopefully encourage residents affected by domestic violence to seek help and raise awareness of it for everyone."

Information days are being held today and tomorrow from 3pm to 5pm.

Anyone interested should call 07985 551912.
