Coutts, who appeared in court in handcuffs and wearing a black roll neck jumper, is charged with the murder of Miss Longhurst in Sussex or elsewhere between March 14 and April 19.

There was no application for bail.

Miss Longhurst, 31, disappeared on March 14.

She was last seen by her partner Malcolm Sentance at the house the couple shared in Shaftesbury Road, Brighton.

Her body was found in woodland at an RSPB sanctuary near Pulborough on April 19.
