Members of a credit union have received a two per cent dividend on their savings this month.

Brighton's Credit Union, the savings and loans cooperative, has members throughout the city and has had a 32 per cent increase in membership since the start of the year.

President Catherine Shelley said: "We are really pleased we have been able to reward our members for saving with us during the past year.

"As a co-operative we have no outside shareholders and our profits are shared with our members, keeping the money in the local community."

The credit union, authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority, provides secure savings and cheap loans to its members.

Brighton and Hove City Council and the Government's regeneration scheme for East Brighton, eb4u, support its work in relieving poverty in the city by providing an alternative to high-cost lenders.

The union is based at 4 Dorset Street, off Edward Street, Brighton BN2 1WA.
