Albion chairman Dick Knight pointed out the club had not given its permission to those Labour councillors who used the club's logo in election literature.

Party politics, he said, has no place in football.

This has not stopped Lord Bassam (The Argus, April 2) from rushing into print with a statement attacking Norman Baker MP for his comments at the stadium public inquiry.

As an Albion season ticketholder, a fan for more than 40 years and a supporter of the club's Falmer For All campaign, I have noted Mr Baker's comments and need no help from Lord Bassam to assess them.

I have also noted that it was Lord Bassam's party that took us into a war with Iraq which many millions of people regard as illegal, criminal and dangerous to world peace - a war Norman Baker has consistently opposed.

Perhaps Brighton Labour Party is getting worried about losing votes to anti-war candidates and sees the stadium inquiry as a chance to attack the Liberal Democrats and Greens?

Football is important but it is not the most important thing in the world.

I hope electors in Brighton and Hove and Lewes - including Albion supporters - will take other policies into account and reject New Labour's attempts to win votes on the single issue of the stadium.
