Holidaymakers jetting off from Gatwick could face fresh delays after air traffic controllers called for a strike ballot over bonuses paid to two executives.

They want to call a 15-minute strike after discovering one director received a £215,000 bonus and the other was given £62,000.

Even such a short walkout could cause long delays, especially if the strike was called during "rush hour".

David Luxton, national officer for Prospect, the union calling for strikes, said: "It would be a token protest but even a strike lasting 15 minutes would cause havoc."

The threat comes just days after airport firefighters and security staff announced a series of pre-Christmas strikes.

Details of those are due to be worked out at union meetings held by the TGWU this morning and Amicus on Wednesday.

The strikes will also affect Heathrow, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports.

The Fire Brigades Union, which is also threatening a national strike, has said it will not provide cover because airports require specialist equipment.
