A bit of old Brighton which has been an eyesore for decades has finally closed.
When the car park in Jubilee Street first opened in the Fifties it was supposed to be temporary.
Selma Montford, secretary of the Brighton Society said: "It has certainly been open a long time. These car parks creep into derelict areas. They are not planned but they emerge."
Notices on the car park said its last day of trading was Saturday and that it would be permanently closed from today.
Over last 30 years the car park has been earmarked for a succession of developments, all involving a new central library.
In 1973 a scheme also featuring a swimming pool was approved, then scuppered by local government reorganisation.
Five years ago another scheme by East Sussex County Council was scrapped for similar reasons.
This time the car park is scheduled to make way for multi-million pound development, including a library.
