Mid Sussex MP Nicholas Soames has called for a robust council policy to deal with illegal travellers' camps.

Tory Mr Soames proposed zero tolerance for any travellers who breach the district council's code of conduct.

He said: "While we need to accommodate the needs of travellers, antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated. The rights of local residents and businesses must be respected."

Mid Sussex District Council was prompted to look at a strategy after more than 30 caravans moved on to a site in Leylands Road, Burgess Hill, in August.

Mr Soames said: "The appalling events of recent months underlined the urgent need for a more effective plan in Mid Sussex.

"Last summer's events must never be repeated."

Mr Soames said the Government's proposed increase in enforcement powers for the police depend on the provision of temporary, transit and emergency stopping sites.

He said: "I have made strong representations to the Deputy Prime Minister following an extensive consultation."

Last month district councillors called for more temporary travellers' sites to cut the cost of clearing up unofficial sites.

Mid Sussex District Council has spent more than £30,000 dealing with illegal encampments this year after the number of unauthorised sites doubled.

Scrutiny committee chairwoman Margaret Hersey said: "Due to the situation Mid Sussex found itself in earlier this year, it was agreed this issue must become a priority."
