Selma Montford has been a conservationist and environmental campaigner in Brighton for more than 30 years.

As secretary of the Brighton Society and the long-serving chair of the Conservation Areas Advisory Group, she makes sure no planning changes escape her notice.

Mrs Montford has been right over developments such as Bartholomew Square where she warned the new hotel and civic offices would create a dead space, blocking sea views.

In some other schemes, her opposition can mean none of the compromises sometimes needed to let complicated schemes become commercial realities are ever offered.

The Argus may not always agree with Selma Montford but her opinions are always well worked out and should be respected.
