Almost 2,000 moviegoers had to be evacuated when fire broke out in a cinema last night.

The blaze, which is being treated as arson, started in the toilets of the UGC cinema in Crawley.

A security guard discovered the fire on the fourth floor during an inspection at 10pm.

Cinema staff evacuated about 1,800 people from the building. They had to wait on the street while firefighters dealt with the blaze.

Two crews were sent from Crawley fire station to extinguish the fire, which was started on a baby changing unit in the disabled toilet.

Fire brigade Sub Officer Ian Melville said: "The fire was started deliberately and because the baby changing unit was made of plastic there was a lot of smoke.

"The disabled toilet is located between two screens and if the security guard had not discovered the fire early it could have been very serious."

Screens 12 and 13, which were next to the toilet, were closed immediately after the fire so the area could be investigated.

Other visitors were allowed to return to their films after about half an hour.
