Do readers recall Desert Storm when the forces of the US and Britain, with worldwide support, were driving the Iraqi army headlong back into Iraq?

The cry went up to finish the job in Baghdad and remove Saddam Hussein.

The reply was this would result in greater casualties and result in the two countries being bogged down in the cauldron of Middle East politics unable to extricate themselves.

What, I ask myself, as the US makes plans to invade Iraq, is different now apart from a reorganised Iraqi army, hostility throughout the Arab world, resistance from our European colleagues, growing opposition in the USA and Britain, a divided Cabinet, the price of petrol already rising and the certainty of a greater number of casualties?

Perhaps I have missed something.
