Dozens of historic sites in Sussex are open to the public free of charge over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Dr Simon Thurley, chief executive of English Heritage, which looks after many of the sites, said: "For family outings during the school holidays, there is no better way to inspire young imaginations than at the actual site of a battle, among the humble stones which once sheltered ancient man or within the walls of castles where important matters of state were once settled.
"Many sites are the stuff of local legend and lore, plenty are perfect for picnics and play while others graphically show how architecture has evolved. All have seen history taking shape through centuries."
English Heritage sites in East Sussex include: Battle Abbey and battlefield; Bayham Old Abbey, Camber Castle and Lewes Castle, Michelham Priory and Pevensey Castle.
In West Sussex the sites include, Boxgrove Priory, Bramber castle, Fishbourne Roman Palace, Marlipins Museum, the Priest House and Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.
