Games of films do not have a good track record and often lead to cries of "it should have been so much better".

Anyone who wasted their hard-earned on Evil Dead, Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza or the risible Planet Of The Apes will be familiar with the heartbreak of missed opportunities.

But The Sum Of All Fears is the game of the film of the book and is the latest tactical shooter bearing Tom Clancy's name and follows on from the classic Rainbow Six and award-winning Ghost Recon.

You lead a crack team of FBI hostage rescue agents, performing good deeds at the behest of Uncle Sam.

You start rescuing a news team from a ragged band of hillbilly militiamen but soon your team has been seconded to the CIA.

From here you get to kill neo-Nazi terrorists in a wide variety of different countries.

Despite its pedigree, the game feels cobbled together -a rushed release to tie-in with the film's UK release last week.

Not enough thought has gone into the level design and the objectives are repetitive - there must be more to saving the world than planting bombs or stealing documents.

The game is easy to pick up thanks to the tutorial and very easy to play.

You have to turn off the default aids - specifically the map showing all live enemies and the auto aim -to feel the least bit involved.

In contrast, the multi-player side has been given a lot of attention and includes a wide variety of team versus, co-op and deathmatch modes.

These include cat and mouse, sharpshooter, domination, siege, firefight and recon.

As well as the main mission maps, there are many more exclusive to multi-player.

If your looking for something to fill the time this will do fine. But if you want something more engaging wait until October for Rainbow Six: Raven Shield.
