Licensing group Galleon has secured a deal with chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov to promote rights to all merchandise using his name.

The agreement, which has been struck through Galleon's subsidiary Clipper, covers areas ranging from games and giftware to videos and web sites.

Clipper managing director John Knox said: "Chess is arguably the biggest pastime by participation in the world and Kasparov enjoys tremendous respect.

"The values of respect, intelligence, success and achievement will be central to each campaign."

The world number one is set to boost his profile when he goes head-to-head with the reigning computer chess champion in Jerusalem in October.

The event, the Russian's first outing since losing to a machine called Deep Blue in a previous computer challenge, should generate worldwide interest and provide Clipper with a foundation for its campaign.

Mr Knox said: "Garry Kasparov is more than just a chess player, he's an icon. His achievements, talents, reputation and imagery will be distilled into a potent licensing programme."

Products would be aimed at adults and anticipated licensing a range of executive products, such as limited edition Kasparov watches.

London-based Clipper represents properties in children's animation as well as celebrities.
