Thank God for Beryl Fleming, from Findon Valley (Letters, June 26). I was beginning to think I was the only person in the whole world who detests football and all to do with it.

When the winter season is finished, we are still bombarded with matches throughout the summer which completely mess up all the TV schedules. Everything is put on later, even cancelled, to make way for blasted football. As for the poor England team feeling very tired, my heart bleeds for them, poor souls. They are getting all that money to do something they love and are still not happy. I have heard Beckham gets £125,000 a week for his hard work, which I think is absolutely disgusting.

How long would it take the normal hard-working chap to get that sort of money? People will come back and say, well, it is a short-lived career, to which I answer, so are a lot of other jobs. Anyone can be made redundant, as I have been.

What's wrong with footballers getting another job, then? Yes, they may give to charity but even that's a load of codswallop. Take the party two certain people gave recently - if that's not showing off, I don't know what is.

They had massive marquees stuffed with palm trees, people dancing and doing kung fu in the gardens, masses of food and so on. It must have cost them more than a million, I should think. Why didn't they simply give all that money to charity instead of the huge party? Then it would have been for the good of others.

Okay, yes, I probably am envious. Well, who isn't? I would be quite happy to earn £1,000 a week, let alone what these over-rated people get. I was going to say "earn" but that would be the wrong word. Anyway, Beryl, good

on yer.
