Sussex League chiefs have vowed to stamp out on-field dissent after two players were banned.

Haywards Heath's Tom Benham and Roffey's Paul Harrison were each suspended for two matches by their clubs after being reported for disputing decisions.

Those bans have been approved by the league, who have the power to order a hearing if they are not happy with the punishment meted out by clubs.

League chairman Terry Burstow said: "It is not unknown for players to be banned but it is very rare. Dissent against umpires seems to be getting worse but the clubs are right behind us in trying to stamp it out.

"It is bad news to have two players banned in such quick succession but our record is a lot better than other premier leagues."

Burstow has urged umpires to report future problems, even if the player apologises after the match. He said: "My policy is that, if someone apologises to me, I will still submit the report but with a note to that effect at the bottom."

Burstow added the players were not guilty of swearing and would not be fined.
