This week, the main Brighton Jazz Club event takes place on Saturday (May 4) at the Sussex Arts Club.

It's a rare chance to catch one of the UK's major jazz names on a club date.

Pianist and composer Michael Garrick was musical director for the Sixties series Poetry And Jazz In Concert, featuring writers such as Laurie Lee, Adrian Mitchell, Vernon Scannell, Spike Milligan and Dannie Abse.

He has worked in legendary quintets with Joe Harriott, Shake Keane, Don Rendell and Ian Carr and led many groups, including his own big band.

His quartet reunites him with UK drum stalwart Alan Jackson, who has played for John Surman and Mike Westbrook.

At the same venue on Tuesday, there's a special gig from trumpeter Ian Hamer's Miles Davis tribute, including Californian John Starks, saxes, and Joss Peach, piano.

Another of his occasional partners is brilliant saxman Kelvin Christiane who, on Thursday, appears at Lewes Jazz Club with his own band.

Kelvin has released six inventive solo CDs, including 2001's Live At The 606. His material often highlights the late Roland Kirk.
