An investigation has been launched into a scam to con grieving families.
Councillor Michael Dennis, West Sussex Cabinet member for public safety has voiced disgust over the bogus invoices sent to executors and solicitors dealing with the estates of people who have died.
Coun Dennis said: "I am disgusted at the depths to which some people will sink to get money, especially at such a sensitive time."
A company, based in France, claims the bills are from a UK-based Christian bookshop for Bibles and other books ordered before the person died.
But Patrick Bligh-Cheesman, head of trading standards for West Sussex, said there was no evidence any orders had been placed.
Mr Bligh-Cheesman said: "There is also no evidence any books were received by the deceased person named in the demand. I would urge people and solicitors to be on guard."
