The Lib Dems' historic victory in the former Tory stronghold of Worthing was clearly too much to take in - even for their leader.

Minutes after the party seized control of the borough, a Press release was sent to us from leader Charles Kennedy, describing the result as "a slight setback."

Instead of adding his voice to the cheers which filled the hall as the result was announced, Mr Kennedy said: "We have had a slight setback. But at least this result shows people aren't prepared to turn back to the Tories."

The statement continues: "Labour has clearly had some success with their budget."

In fact, Labour's complement of zero seats on the council remained unchanged last night.

A spokesman for Charles Kennedy's office today explained there had been a mix-up in the excitement and the wrong Press release had been sent out.

He claimed the BBC had initially misreported the Worthing result and the statement had been sent out on that basis.

He said: "Of course, we are now aware of the stunning victory achieved by party workers and we look forward to doing our best for the people of Worthing and would like to thank them for showing us their support."

However, the Lib Dems' result on neighbouring Adur Council was not as impressive - they failed to win any of the 14 seats up for grabs after failing to field any candidates.
