More than 100 mourners bid a final farewell at the funeral of former Mayor of Worthing Harry Yates.

Touching tributes were made at the service in Saint Andrew's Church, Worthing.

Mr Yates died on March 21, aged 86, leaving his wife Stella, daughters Rachel and Patience, three grandsons and one granddaughter.

At yesterday's funeral, his long-standing friend, the Reverend Mervyn Coussens, spoke of a "true gentleman" who was a devoted husband, father and politician.

Mr Yates was the youngest of five children.

He and Mrs Yates married in 1941 after meeting seven years earlier at a tennis club dance.

He became a Conservative Councillor for Tarring in 1973 and was mayor of Worthing from 1983 to 1984.

He went on 600 engagements with Mrs Yates, the mayoress.

In 1996 he was made an honorary alderman.

He was a past governor of Worthing Sixth Form College and Thomas A'Becket school, Worthing, and remained chairman of finance on the board of governors at St Andrew's High School, Worthing, until his death.

Mr Yates was buried in Durrington cemetery.
