Hailsham's Wayne Alexander will fight for the WBO world title against Daniel Santos in July.

The British and European light-middleweight champion will meet the Puerto Rican at a venue still to be decided.

Alexander, 28, was in London with his promoter Frank Warren yesterday, putting pen to paper on a new contract which will allow him a second shot at a world title.

Fourteen months ago Alexander put in an eye-catching display when challenging Namibia's Harry Simon for the WBO title. Simon won in five rounds but Alexander, having taken the fight at 48 hours' notice, did enough to impress the boxing world.

Simon has since vacated the title and Santos is the current champion after beating Mexico's Yory Boy Campas in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Santos, 26, has a record of 24 wins and three defeats from 29 professional contests and KO'd Britain's Neil Simpson for the WBO welterweight title last year. He stepped up a division to meet Campas.

Alexander produced an explosive display as he defended his British title against Joe Townsley last November and followed that up with an equally savage demolition of Italy's Paolo Pizzamiglio to claim the European crown at Bethnal Green in January.

Alexander will have a non-title international ten-rounder against an opponent to be decided on the undercard of the Ricky Hatton-Eamonn Magee bill in Manchester on May 25.
