A 21-year-old man was arrested after a smash at a road junction in which four people were injured.

One car flipped onto its roof while another ploughed through a set of traffic lights after they were in collision.

Emergency services freed the three occupants of the overturned car before taking them to Worthing General Hospital following the smash at the junction of Sompting Road and Upper Brighton Road on the A27 at Sompting.

The driver of the other car left the scene but was later arrested by police.

The man, from Sompting, was released on bail until April 2 pending further inquiries.

His female passenger suffered minor injuries. The crash, which happened at 8.30pm yesterday, closed the A27 for two hours as emergency services cleared the debris.

Two fire engines and a heavy rescue unit were called.

Leading fire fighter John Barker said: "It was a serious, high-impact collision. The traffic lights were mowed down."
