Demonstrators are expected to turn out for a further protest tomorrow in a bid to save Eastbourne's Old Town library.

The demo will take place outside Eastbourne Town Hall as part of a campaign to get funding for the library in Victoria Drive.

East Sussex County Council decided last week to close the 50-year-old library on March 28 to save £26,000.

But campaigners have not lost hope, insisting the battle to save the library has only just begun.

They say it is vital for elderly people and 3,500 children at nearby schools, who would otherwise have to travel two miles to visit the central library.

Eastbourne Borough Council will tomorrow debate a motion from Liberal Democrat Maurice Skilton calling on the authority to pick up the £26,000 bill.

The motion also urges members who also serve on the county council to fight for the reinstatement of funding.

Coun Skilton said: "There is a lot of optimism that the library will be saved.

"I hope the council will take on board the wishes of the people of Old Town and support the motion. I think it will be very hard for them to ignore."

Campaigner Susan Otter, of Otter's Pharmacy in Victoria Drive, said: "The campaign is still going very strong. People are organising themselves effectively."

Members of Friends of Old Town Library are already organising fund-raising events in an effort to meet the £26,000.

A previous demo held before the county council decided to axe the library drew more than 400 people of all ages.

Tomorrow's town hall meeting starts at 6pm.
